Hi,
I'm looking for concentration data concerning neurotransmitters in the cerebral cortex. Also, what is the composition of the extracellular fluid in wich the neurons are surronded ?
Thanks a lot for your help,
Geneviève

Hi there,
Glutamate is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the cerebral cortex. Altered glutamatergic transmission has been suggested as having a central role in many neurodegenerative diseases. Metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) are coupled to intracellular signal transduction via G proteins, and they mediate slower responses than ionotropic glutamate receptors.
Many properties of neurons, from the type of neurotransmitters used to ion channel composition, are maintained across species, allowing scientists to study processes occurring in more complex organisms in much simpler experimental systems.
Thanks and regards,
