Advances in understanding nervous system function,
dysfunction and treatment have created a need for more scientists in this exciting area of research. Albany Medical College has a graduate program designed to provide the education and expertise needed for a career in Neuropharmacology and Neuroscience research. Specialized areas of study include development of the nervous system, dynamics of transmitter systems and receptors, systems/behavioral neuroscience, substance abuse, neural bases of nervous system disorders, stroke, pain and its treatment, and drug development. Supervised by internationally recognized faculty, our students benefit from the individual attention that the program fosters. Graduates of this program are well-prepared for careers in research and teaching in a variety of academic, clinical and industry settings.

The Doctoral Training Program in Neuropharmacology and Neuroscience

During their first year, students participate in three laboratory rotations and courses that provide the student with a broad-based education in biochemistry, cell biology and molecular biology. Students select a mentor who supervises their graduate training. They also take courses in the principles of cellular and molecular neuroscience, neuropharmacology, neuroanatomy and nervous system disorders, and statistics, plus a variety of electives. Original laboratory research, literature studies and seminar presentations are essential components of the program. Presentation of their research at national meetings and visits with renowned scientists brought to AMC by the CNN Seminar series enhance each student's professional development.

All Ph.D. students are fully supported throughout their studies. Support includes annual, full tuition scholarship of $17,400, a stipend of $23,000 and individual health insurance coverage. Completion of the Ph.D. program typically takes four to five years. We also offer a program leading to the M.S. degree, which can be completed in two years. No stipend support is provided for the MS degree program.
